Capanne, the prison with bamboo bars

One meter from freedom, but the real one is in the garden: nature works miracles in prison.

A meter, a little more a little less, every day, separates them from freedom. "But the real thing is the work in the fields, the joy of seeing our products grow, the beauty of feeling changed, useful, positive". We are in the open countryside, in the green heart of Umbria, among vegetables, fruit, the will to live and redemption. We are in the prison of Perugia. Here it is really possible to pay for mistakes but to regain dignity. That of being workers of the earth, who put quality in the shopping basket, thinking of the children and families who stay at home. Here they are the inmates of Capanne who go down to the garden every day because that work is the most precious thing there can be to get back to feeling alive. There are even those who have served their sentence, could go out but have asked to stay. At least until there's a job out there. In Perugia they are a source of pride and pride. Citizens queue at the market because they want those vegetables there, those of the prisoners. And many ask that they be taken home. "I can finally send my honest sweat allowance to my wife and children." Here is the figure of a real change. If prison means re-education, put a vegetable garden in the cell and the goal is at hand
